He said police are speaking to retailers - both large and small - about the best way to safeguard their stock and themselves.
"This includes making the interior of your shop more visible to passers-by so if something is amiss people can see it, to better shop layout and the securing of attractive items."
The warning comes after it was revealed last week the Health Ministry had considered increasing the price of cigarettes to $100 a packet within eight years.
Drastic measures such as this have been considered by the Government as it seeks to achieve its goal of a smokefree New Zealand by 2025.
Police want to hear from anyone offered cheap cigarettes for sale or sees them available for purchase, including at car boots sales or at markets.
Anyone with information on the identities of the Huntly robbers or who has been offered cheap cigarettes is asked to contact Mr Mortimore at the Huntly Police station on 07 828 7560.
