Waikato police are investigating thieves who stole - then crashed - a truck carrying a bobcat, before taking off with a man's ute at Karapiro.
Senior Sergeant Ray Malcolmson said they were not sure of the time of the first theft - of the Isuzu truck which had a bobcaton the back - as staff at Aztech Buildings in Tamahere, on the outskirts of Hamilton, only discovered it was missing when arriving for work at 5.30am today.
Not long after they reported it missing, a Karapiro man rang to report that his older model Toyota Hilux had been stolen.
Police went to investigate and found the black and white truck and bobcat had crashed into a bank on Taotaoroa Rd. The man with the stolen Hilux lived just down the road.
Malcolmson said although they've found the stolen truck, the white Hilux was still missing.
Anyone who may have seen either a truck with a bobcat on the back being driven during the early hours of the morning or a white Hilux around Taotaoroa Rd, south of the Hobbiton movie set, is asked to contact police on 07 858 6200.
