The Mines Rescue Service says its West Coast base will not be lost, even if the beleaguered Spring Creek Mine is shut.
The future of the Dunollie mine is expected to be known on Monday, but Mines Rescue New Zealand Trust chairman Dave Stewart said whatever the outcome of that,the service would not cease on the Coast.
"The need is still here,'' he told the Greymouth Star. However we will be holding an extraordinary meeting after the Spring Creek announcement to discuss how the possible mine closure may affect Mines Rescue.
"If, for example, the mine is closed, our meeting will talk about the the structure of the group on the West Coast. Until Monday, we don't know the specifics.''
Mines Rescue employs six fulltime staff, with additional volunteers, at its base just outside of Runanga.
