The vehicles will be deployed at the downtown area near the world's tallest building, the Burj Khalifa tower, as well as the cafe- and restaurant-lined walk of Jumeirah Beach Residence, one of the state's most popular waterfront developments.
Hot Wheels go retro
Let's face it: Hot Wheels cars are cool.
Its versions of classic movie and television cars are even cooler.
The legendary maker of 1:64 models has announced a Retro Entertainment series of vehicles from classic shows of the 60s, 70s and 80s, including Batman (the classic 60s Batmobile), Knight Rider (KITT and KARR), Magnum PI (Ferrari 308 GTS, the Island Hopper helicopter and a VW van), Ferris Bueller's Day Off (Ferrari 250 California), Ghostbusters (ECTO 1) and The A-Team (GMC van, Face's Corvette). There are also a few oddities, including a Cylon Raider from Battlestar Galactica, a 71 Plymouth Satellite from The Brady Bunch, a school bus from The Muppets and the Mystery Machine van from Scooby Doo.
There are 35 cars and while there has been no official announcement about local availability, we would put money on them appearing here.
And no doubt we'll will spend quite a bit on them too ...
Bugatti still fastest
Last week we told you how the good people at Guinness World Records had taken the title of world's fastest production car from the Bugatti Veyron Super Sport because it didn't qualify as a production car. Bugatti had de-activated the speed limiter fitted to customer cars from the vehicle used in the record-setting run.
Following a review of the definition of a production car, it seems the record holder is now ... the Bugatti Veyron Super Sport.
Guinness' rules stated the record-setting car must be identical to the one customers can buy. Five of the 30 Veyron Super Sports sold were unrestricted World Record Editions, with the other 25 having the 415km/h limiter. So you could really slide whichever way you want to on this one, really. Or argue it over a glass of the black stuff.
As if just to drive the message home that it makes the most pointlessly fast production car in the world, Bugatti fired off another quick record: fastest open-top car. A - yep - special WRC (World Record Car) edition of the Veyron Grand Sport Vitesse clocked 408.82km/h at Volkswagen's Ehra-Lessien proving grounds.
Schumacher does ... something
Following his second retirement from Formula 1, seven-time world champion Michael Schumacher has announced what he will be doing next. Sort of.
Schumacher and Mercedes-Benz revealed the former champ will be doing, er, something vaguely to do with "topics relating to the future, in particular the further development of the Mercedes-Benz safety and comfort systems Intelligent Drive, and represent them as an ambassador".
Everyday motorists will be pleased to know that he is "actively placing his expertise at the service of road users by searching for the best solutions for safety on the roads together with Mercedes-Benz".
"The future interests me much more than the present and past. During my Formula 1 time I always believed that you must not allow yourself to rest on your laurels, but that you must continuously try to improve. In so doing I was very often able to rely on the help of all the technologies available to me in the car and use them to my advantage. That is why I am a declared supporter of driving assistance systems both in the racing car and in the road-going car," Schumacher said.
But then he was always a master of stating the obvious. The press release notes, "As a racing driver Schumacher's motto was 'If you don't go forwards, you go backwards'." No kidding?
We are the world
* A General Motors powertrain assembly plant in Detroit was evacuated for a short time after a worker threatened to shoot himself. With a starter pistol. Loaded with blanks. Apparently the man had complained about working conditions at the plant and had decided to take matters into his own hands. Sort of.
* Getting annoyed at television coverage of your favourite sport is nothing new, but a man in Charlotte, North Carolina, took his frustration to the extreme when he stripped naked and ran riot in the offices of the Speed Network, a US motorsport channel. The man entered the building on Monday morning and started "tearing papers off the walls" before moving on to throwing rubbish bins and trophies around. He made a run for it when he realised the police had arrived, but the general lack of naked people on the streets of Charlotte made him relatively easy to find. No word on whether he is facing charges, or his reasons for doing it.
