Aucklanders can expect "explosive showers" and squally winds to push through the city this afternoon and into the evening, according to weather experts.

WeatherWatch.co.nz said torrential downpours may cause flash and surface flooding, with hailstorms a possibility later tonight and into the morning.

Meanwhile, a weather warning for the Hawkes Bay and Wairarapa has been removed after winds eased off this afternoon, but the MetService warned that some places may still experience occasional strong gusts.

A warning for the Catlins area in the South Island has also been lifted, though snow showers are expected above 300 metres.

Complications at Kaimai

Fog and heavy rain descended on the Kaimai Ranges in the North Island, where a tanker broke down and blocked traffic. Police said the tanker was no longer blocking the road but work going on around the vehicle created a hazard for passing motorists.

Police have also asked motorists to avoid State Highway 29 near Kaimai school, where fallen powerlines were said to be sparking and burning. One lane of the highway has been closed.

One Fire Service appliance was in attendance, reported NZPA.

MetService advised people in affected areas to keep up-to-date with forecasts and to take care on the roads.
