A terrified teenage girl called for help from her cellphone when she became trapped in her car in a flash flood in Levin on Friday night.
Levin Fire senior station officer Glenn Johns said the girl was "terrified".
"She was very frightened ... we managed to get to her. Herfather and two of the fire crew managed to push her out," he said.
As roads throughout the region were closed including State Highway 1 south of Ohau, Kuku Beach farmers held fears high-tide due at noon yesterday would flood more paddocks.
Kuku Beach Rd was cut off about 4km towards the beach, cutting off about 15 homes.

Sharemilker Lucy Watson said Friday night was harrowing with 125ha of the 150ha property under water and flood waters a good metre up the side of the house, flooding the garage.
Watson said she was trapped south of Ohau trying to get back from Wellington and when she arrived she was greeted by "absolute chaos".
"It was a good half a metre high and then within one and half hours it was really high - we had to move the car out of the garage - there was water everywhere."
Autumn lambs and pregnant stock were moved to high ground.

Hokia Beach Rd was also cut off, standing many residents as were Ohau Rds. Buller Rd was closed on Friday night as was State Highway 1 south of Levin.
Meanwhile, in Levin streets were also threatening to flood with one Queenwood Rd resident calling for help.
Lyn Gray said she had a sleepless night as water threatened her home.
"We were ready to go but we didn't need to. I'm a bit worried about more rain coming through though. The drains just don't seem to be coping."
