One person has been freed from a van that rolled down a bank in Ohaaki, near Reporoa.
A St John spokeswoman said the person was initially trapped in the van.
Nine other people made it out of the van and had minor injuries.
A police spokeswoman said police were called to the scene on State Highway 5 near Dan Rd just after 2.30pm.
She said a person was taken to Rotorua Hospital with moderate injuries after they were freed from the van.
The crash scene was cleared away about 4.40pm, she said.
The van was on its side and partially blocking one lane, she said earlier.
St John, police and Fire and Emergency New Zealand were at the scene.
Meanwhile, emergency services are responding to a serious crash between a truck and a van on State Highway 6 near Richmond, south of Nelson.
The incident took place around 3.15pm on Richmond Deviation and there are reports one person is trapped inside the van. Crews were working to free them.
Traffic congestion is building and motorists are asked to avoid the area. Diversions are in place.
