A teenager killed in a crash in Edendale, Southland, has been named as 18-year-old Harlee Patera Symes.

Symes, from Oteramika, died on April 28 after a crash just before 9pm near the intersection of Homestead and Hilda Rds, about 37km northeast of Invercargill.

Another person in the car was seriously injured and was taken by ambulance to hospital.

A police spokeswoman said a 36-year-old woman was driving the car, and speed and alcohol may have been factors.

No other vehicle appeared to be involved and the Serious Crash Unit was investigating the cause.

Friends and family have taken to social media to make tributes to the young woman described as "the greatest friend to so many" and "truly one in a million".

One friend wrote, "You found the best in every person and you loved everyone for who they were."

Another wrote, "I love you so much Harlee words will never be able to describe how much you meant to me and how much I'm going to miss you."

Symes was studying sport and recreation at the Southern Institute of Technology, and previously attended Menzies College in Wyndham.

A Southern Institute of Technology spokesman said a tutor and counsellor informed Symes' peers of the crash on Monday.

Classes were cancelled that day in respect to Symes and to give students and staff time to grieve. A test was also postponed to the following week.
