Teen seriously injured in head-on collision

A teenager was seriously injured and a stretch of highway closed after a head-on collision today.

Emergency services from Rotorua and Taupo, including Rotorua's BayTrust Rescue helicopter and Taupo's Greenlea Rescue Helicopter, went to State Highway 5 north of Taupo at 11.30am.

"Two patients were airlifted directly from the site to Waikato Hospital," Philips Search and Rescue Trust said.

The victims included a 15 year-old boy with multiple injuries, who was in a serious condition.

The Greenlea helicopter took a 43-year-old German woman to Waikato Hospital with spinal and pelvic injuries. The Baytrust helicopter also took a patient to Waikato Hospital.
