A 6-year-old was rushed to the Starship hospital with serious injuries last night after a two-car crash on the North Shore. It was one of two serious crashes in Auckland, which left several people hurt. A people mover and a sedan collided on Pupuke Rd in Hillcrest about 7pm.
A teenage boy pulled the battery from a crashed car to stop it being restarted as petrol spilled around the smashed vehicle.
The sedan was involved in a collision with another vehicle which resulted in a six-year-old boy being rushed to hospital. He was taken to Starship Children's Hospitalin Auckland with critical injuries after the Monday night accident in Hillcrest on the North Shore.
The boy remained in a stable condition last night.
The child was understood to be travelling with his mother and father when the Pupuke Rd accident happened. He was thrown from the vehicle.
Neighbours have described hearing the loud impact of the crash, followed by the mother's hysterical screams of, "My baby, my baby".
One resident, who wished not to be named, said her 17-year-old son was one of the first on the scene.
The incident had left the family shaken, she said.
"We are all still quite traumatised. The woman was screaming, 'My baby, my baby' and looking for her baby and then someone found him on the footpath. We saw the little boy before he had been tended to."
Police Serious Crash Unit were investigating the accident.
According to Auckland Transport data, more than 15,000 vehicles travelled on Pupuke Rd on average each day and the section of road where the crash happened was low risk, with no previous accidents reported there.
