Teen on electronic bail allegedly attacked police officer

Police say one person is in custody and will appear in court tomorrow on a number of charges.

A 16-year-old was on electronic bail when he and his co-offenders allegedly launched an attack on two Hamilton police officers.

Hamilton city area commander Inspector John Kelly said two officers - one male, one female - went to check on the teen just before 9pm yesterday after he was bailed to a Kahikatea Dr house.

The teen wasn't there however he was found shortly afterwards drinking at a Karen Cres, Dinsdale, property with a number of other people.

Mr Kelly said the people at the scene were initially co-operative before things turned aggressive.

"As our officers were trying to effect an arrest the juvenile has resisted, punching an officer about his head and face.

"We understand about six people have come out of the house and surrounded the police officers with at least one other person believed to have assaulted our staff."

During the course of the attack one of the officers activated their Officer Safety Alarm [OSA] requesting urgent assistance.

However, as one of the units was responding the officer lost control of his patrol car in wet conditions on the Dinsdale roundabout and crashed into a light pole.

None of the three officers were seriously injured, with the male officer getting two stitches for cuts.

"The officers are shaken, I've spoken to both of them, they will take a little bit of time off to recover. Fortunately their injuries are not serious, just a matter of bruising for one," Mr Kelly said.

"The [officer] told me he has been very humbled by the support from both the organisation and his colleagues and appreciative of the effort that we go into to look after our people."

The 16-year-old was subsequently arrested and charged with wounding with intent and breaching bail. A second teen has also been charged while police are continuing their inquiries into others that may have been involved.

Whether the officer involved in the crash would face any sanctions, Mr Kelly said it was subject to an internal investigation.

"We treat any accident involving our staff the same as we do for any accident, it gets investigated, it gets reported and due consideration given to the circumstances and if a sanction is required then that occurs, same as per anyone."

The vehicle involved in the crash suffered significant damage, he said.
