Mr Andrew said an 18-year-old woman was confirmed dead at the scene.
Her death has now been referred to the coroner.
A 19-year-old woman was flown by rescue helicopter to Dunedin Hospital with facial and leg injuries. She was in a serious condition.
The third occupant, a 21-year-old woman, was flown to Christchurch Hospital, also in a serious condition, and with suspected spinal injuries.
The three occupants of the car were all employed by the Hermitage Hotel.General manager of Hermitage Hotel, Leigh Stock, said last night's accident was a tragedy.
"The three females were all staff members of the Hermitage and our thoughts and prayers are with their respective families.
"The team at the Hermitage develop into a close knit family over their time with us, no matter how short or long they spend in the community.
"Our team are grieving over this tragic event as we remember a lovely young lady, who will be truly missed."
Meanwhile, Mr Andrew said police investigation into the crash would continue.
"The weather conditions were relatively mild in the area overnight with good road conditions."
The police serious crash unit completed a scene examination earlier this morning, and Tasman Valley Rd has since reopened.
