Teen driver dies in speedway crash

A teenage speedway driver has been killed at an Easter meet in Northland this afternoon.

The a 15-year-old girl was taking part in Kaikohe Speedway's Easter Stampede & Demolition Derby when the accident happened about 4pm.

The girl was dead when ambulance officers arrived at the scene, said St John Ambulance communications team manager Keith Hall.

Kaikohe Car Club secretary Debbie Beadle confirmed a visiting 15-year-old female driver had been killed.

The girl was running in the mini stocks event, but the club would not comment any further, she said.
