A Coromandel teen diver was left fizzing after an “epic” up-close encounter with a pod of orca.
Lexi Henderson came face-to-face with the majestic mammals during a dive off Castle Rock near Hot Water Beach on Friday.
The 18-year-old diving instructor said she and several Cathedral Cove Diving and Snorkelco-workers decided to go for a “fun dive” after a busy day guiding tours.
“We came up from our scuba dive and our friends back on the boat were just saying, ‘Orcas, orcas, orcas!’,” she said.
“I was at boarding school, I wasn’t really loving it,” she said.
“I just wanted to do something different and I’ve grown up around the water and loved being in the water so I thought dive instructing would be an amazing career path.”
The Hahei resident says she loved working with Cathedral Cove Diving and Snorkel and hoped to eventually explore career opportunities overseas.
Seidel, 31, originally from Western Australia but working in New Zealand “for the season”, said he had dreamed of encountering orca his whole life.
“You can’t plan moments like this or buy encounters like that with any amount of money,” he said.
“It’s so special when they choose to hang out with you, when they genuinely want to know what you are.”
