A teenage boy died in a car crash in South Otago tonight.

Emergency services were called to Owaka Valley Rd in the Owaka Valley about 6.45pm.

Police said the teen died when his car left the road and struck a bank.

He was the only occupant of the vehicle, and no other cars were involved.

The road was down to one lane as crash investigators examined the scene.

The police said the teen's name would be made public once his next of kin had been told of the fatality.
