Teen cyclist in hospital after collision with car on Auckland's North Shore

A serious bicycle-car accident is affecting traffic on East Coast Bays Rd at rush hour this morning.

A young female cyclist is in a stable condition after a collision with a car on a major North Shore road this morning.

Motorists were warned to expect long delays near Browns Bay after the accident on East Coast Bays Rd.

Police said the accident happened around 6.30am at the intersection of Weetman Dr.

A police spokeswoman said the injured teenager was taken to Auckland Hospital in a critical condition.

No one else was hurt in the crash.

The serious crash unit was investigating the accident, she said.

An Auckland District Health Board spokesman said the injured 18-year-old was in a stable condition.

Earlier motorists were urged to avoid the area as it had caused significant delays to traffic.

However, two hours later the crash had been cleared and traffic was returning to normal.
