Teen crashes car after Auckland police pursuit

A teenager is in serious condition after crashing a stolen vehicle following a police chase in West Auckland this morning.

A police patrol spotted the car, reported stolen from Huapai, speeding on Swanson Rd just after 5am.

It began to follow the car but abandoned the pursuit because of the speed the stolen stationwagon was travelling, police said in a statement.

Police then found the crashed vehicle at an intersection. It appeared to have hit a traffic island then a tree.

Firefighters had to be called to cut the teen from the wreck and was taken to Auckland Hospital where he was in a serious condition.

The Waitemata Serious Crash Unit, Waitakere CIB and the Independent Police Conduct Authority [IPCA] were looking into the crash.
