A Hokitika teenager suffered serious burns after a party prank backfired in Kokatahi.
Senior Constable Jason Martin said the boy suffered second-degree burns to the backs of his legs after a diesel container was thrown on to a bonfire at a property in Bowen Street, Kokatahi.
Mr Martin said policewere initially called to the party about 12.15am on Saturday to deal with gatecrashers before the fire incident. The victim was taken to Grey Base Hospital and later flown to Christchurch Hospital.
