Tears and a haka as funeral of Daniel Baldwin, who died after a rugby game, held in Wellington

More than 500 people gathered for the funeral of a Wellington teenager who died after a club rugby game two weekends ago.

Daniel Baldwin's funeral was held at Wellington Football Club in Hataitai.

Five hundred seats set up in the club rooms were full and others gathered in a room below to watch proceedings on a screen.

Baldwin's rugby teammates said their goodbyes with a moving haka.

Their voices were strong although they wiped away tears with trembling hands before they began.

Mourners placed rosemary sprigs on top of his casket and hugged or shook hands with family members.

The funeral went for just over an hour.

Some of Baldwin's friends and a representative for his family made speeches.

The inside page of the order of service read "I miss you. I miss your voice. I miss your smile. I miss your smell. I miss your hug. I miss your jokes. I miss how you made me feel. I miss your everything."

A private cremation will be held for Baldwin.

Baldwin displayed concussion symptoms and left the field near the end of a colts age-group game between his Wellington club and Paremata Plimmerton at Ngati Toa Domain on May 13. His condition deteriorated rapidly.

He was rushed to Wellington Hospital, where he had brain surgery on Saturday night and spent the days since in an induced coma.

Baldwin, 19, died with his family - parents Len and Eva, and brothers Stefan and Markus - girlfriend, and other family and friends in attendance.

Baldwin's family has asked people to give money to the SPCA and Wellington Free Ambulance in lieu of flowers.

Baldwin dreamed of becoming a police dog handler and was studying psychology, statistics and criminology at Victoria University.
