"All of us have been affected by losing close friends," he said.
"I know for sure, I will finding a team that can give an opportunity to lose a bit of puku (tummy)."
Masterton Mayor Lyn Patterson described it as "a lot of camaraderie and a lot of fun.
"Masterton will definitely have a team there."
South Wairarapa deputy Mayor Viv Napier said they have fielded a variety of teams in the past, usually with eye-catching costumes.
She has never managed to get to one, but hopes to this year.
Property Brokers regional manager Guy Mordaunt said they were "chuffed" to be involved as the major sponsor.
"It's a real special day," he said. On a previous relay, he walked for 12 hours.
"It was great fun."
