The union representing secondary school teachers says performance-related salaries don't work.
One of the country's newest knights - former Auckland Grammar headmaster Sir John Graham - would like to see teachers paid based on their performance.
PPTA president Robin Duff says that system destroys collegiality and undermines trust and confidence.
"It's usually a pretty bankrupt system in the sense that it very often has a finite amount of money going to a very set amount of people," he says.
Mr Duff says schools in Florida are now vigorously getting rid of the scheme because it';s been so damaging.
