The son of a Northland teacher has been charged with a brutal attack on her in her home on Wednesday night.
Hayden Karl Brown, 21, unemployed, of Kaitaia, appeared in Whangarei District Court this morning charged with the serious assault of his mother Susan Brown, 42.
Brown was remanded in custody while
a psychiatric report is prepared. He is due to reappear on July 9.
Ms Brown, was found semi-conscious and with head injuries, in her blood-stained bed just before 9am on Thursday after she failed to turn up for school.
Her son faces charges of robbing Ms Brown of $20 with a hammer, wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm, and the arson of Ms Brown's house.
Detective Inspector Viv Rickard, head of the 47-member inquiry team, said other charges could still be laid.
Earlier today Ms Brown remained in the critical care department at Auckland Hospital, and was this morning listed as "stable and fairly satisfactory".
