“The two seriously injured patients are headed to Waikato Hospital by helicopter.”
The patient in moderate condition was transported to Waikato Hospital by ambulance.
Police said the road is closed and diversions are in place at McCabe Rd and Waihou Rd.
“The two-vehicle crash was reported at around 1.40pm.
“Initial indications are that there are serious injuries.”
Police said motorists are advised to avoid the area and expect delays.
A local resident, who asked not to be named, said he saw the Westpac rescue helicopter landing nearby.
“It’s been pretty hectic the last 20 minutes,” he said.
“There have been a lot of sirens. So it’s not looking good.”
He said the road was slippery because of recent rainfall.
