Police have confirmed a body has been found after a man was hit by a train about 5.40am today in Tauranga.
Acting Senior Sergeant Cam Anderson said a pedestrian had been hit. He believed the body was male.
"It's been a train versus pedestrian and it's resulted in a fatality,"he said. "Police and ambulance are at the scene and a funeral director has been called."
"It wasn't a student, I'd say the person is aged between 30-40."
"The train driver is receiving support. It's hard to stop something that long," he said. "And it's hard for the train driver because there's nothing they can do."
Mr Anderson said the train driver was receiving support from Victim Support and other agencies.
Ngatai Rd is closed between Otumoetai Rd and Western Rd while police assess the scene.
