Ever been interested in participating in a canoe slalom? Waimarino has the chance for you to give it a go and get some advice on the sport from an Olympian.
Give it a go day is being held at Waimarino on November 9 with two free sessions, one at 1pmand the other at 2.30pm, with five-time Olympian Luuka Jones. The event is for kids ages 9 to 13.
“This is the best age for them to get involved in canoe slalom and it is also an Aims sport so they can train for that if they get the bug,” said club member Tim Rex.
“This is a great opportunity to meet someone who started at an event like this and took the sport all the way to the Olympics.”
Rex said once people have arrived, they will be kitted out with a kayak and paddle, and then given some tips on what to do.
“It really is a great outdoor sport where friendships are made, and skills learnt and you can take it as far as you want.”
Rex said there will be some basic coaching and some fun things to do once on the water.
Give it a go day is being held at Waimarino on November 9.
The team of coaches and professionals will include Jones, who will be on and off the water mingling with everyone, two coaches from Spain, Irene and Ekain, and experienced paddlers helping participants to get ready and enjoy themselves.
“Members of the club, current and old, started representing their schools at Aims and then secondary schools and have gone on to represent New Zealand at world championships and the Olympics.”
Rex said people from the club will be on hand to talk about what the club can offer if the kids would like to continue and take their canoe slalom skills further.
