Save A fire in Tauranga, possibly started by an explosion, is reportedly heading towards Esmeralda and Dingadee Streets in Welcome Bay.
A Northern Communications Centre spokesperson said there had been multiple calls about a car fire and a scrub fire on Ranganui Rd.
A Bay of Plenty Times reader said an
exploding car had started a bush fire.
A witness said that three tenders, rural and "some sort of special fire engine" had arrived.
He said the fire was rapidly heading down the hill towards Esmeralda and Dingadee Streets.
