Suspicious church blaze in Waikato

Fire safety officers are investigating a suspicious fire at a Waikato church overnight.

The Fire Service was called to the fire about 5am and found the 10m by 15m building on Meadway Rd near Te Awamutu well alight, northern fire communications shift manager Steve Smith said.

It took six appliances about 45 minutes to get the fire under control, and firefighters spent a further 30 minutes dampening down hotspots, he told NZPA.

Fire safety officers were at the scene this morning investigating the cause of the fire.

It was being treated a suspicious, Mr Smith said.
