The death will be referred to the coroner.
A Surf Life Saving New Zealand (SLSNZ) spokesperson said lifeguards from the Raglan Surf Life Saving responded to an incident at Whale Bay, near Raglan.
“Two lifeguards responded by Inflatable Rescue Boat (IRB) following reports of a potential medical incident at the popular surf break at approximately 2.30pm, where conditions were favourable for surfing.
“They collected the unresponsive patient and returned them to the surf club at Ngarunui Beach, where an ambulance was waiting.
“Five surf lifeguards engaged in resuscitation attempts for at least 20 minutes once the patient was returned to shore.
“Sadly, the patient was declared deceased at the scene.
“The team at Surf Life Saving New Zealand extends its heartfelt condolences to the whānau and friends of the victim. SLSNZ is providing support to the five surf lifeguards involved.”
