STV poll wins in Wellington

The next Wellington local body elections will be held under the STV (single transferable vote) system.

The Wellington City Council decided the public should determine whether STV or the traditional First Past the Post (FPP) system was used in the 2004 elections and yesterday released the provisional result of a postal poll. STV had 21,295 votes to FPP's 19,565.

STV enables voters to vote for as many candidates as they wish, marking them in order of preference.
