Two Otago University students used a wheelie bin "as a type of sledge" on their tragic ride down a Dunedin hillside street that killed one of them
and seriously injured the other early today.
The pair were in the wheelie bin when it crashed into a parked trailer near the bottom of Baldwin St - New Zealand's steepest street - about 2.36 am.
Killed instantly was Ana Louise North, 19, a second year physical education student at the university, who originally came from Blenheim.
Her friend, Lindsay Peter Roxburgh, 19, of Pukekohe, who was also a student at the university, received serious head injuries and underwent surgery today.
Constable Shane Robinson of the North Dunedin Police, said Mr Roxburgh had been at the cricket at Carisbrook earlier in the evening and the pair met up at a student pub afterwards.
They later pushed the wheelie bin from somewhere in the student area to Baldwin St, a considerable distance away, and pushed it three quarters of the way to the top of the hill.
Both got inside the bin as it lay on its side, then rode the bin "as a type of sledge" down the hill until they hit the trailer near the bottom.
People who might have seen the pair in the student area or pushing the wheelie bin are urged to contact Mr Robinson.
The matter will be subject to a coronial inquiry.
