Wairarapa College scored a comprehensive 70-run win over Lansdowne in their Umpires Cup senior men's interclub cricket match played at Wairarapa College on Saturday.
The students batted first and although only three of their batsmen got into double figures they still managed to reach the respectable score of 177.
Opener Gareth Pottinger
carried his bat through the 47 overs in making 55, including four fours, while Sam Monaghan came in at number seven and blasted five fours and two sixes in his 44. Perter Sigvertsen with 13 was best of the rest.
Spearheading the Lansdowne attack were Willie Thomson (2-22), Choi Jackson (3-12) and Dean Goodin (2-12).
The depleted Lansdowne batting line-up never looked like reaching their target, reeling from 17-4 to be all out for just 107.
Lower order player Goodin had one five and two fours in his 24 and Banks five fours in his 25.
Wairarapa College used six bowlers in all with Peter Sigvertsen (2-17), S. Evans (3-18) and Darren Jones (3-11) all having good success.
Short scoreboard:
Wairarapa College 177 (Wyatt 9, Pottinger 55 not out, Lawrence 1, Buchanan 2, Treseder 8, Anderson 0, Monaghan 44, Jones 0, Sigvertsen 13, Evans 0; Thomson 2-22, Jackson 3-12, Goodin 2-12, Lowe 0-24, Banks 1-31, Johnson 2-56, Coulson 0-16;
Lansdowne 107 (Matthews 10, Coulson 0, Butler 0, Jackson 0, Johnson 12, Graham 6, Goodin 24, Banks 25, Thomson 10, Wilson 0, Lowe 0 not out; Sigvertsen 2-17, Evans 3-18, Macklin 1-21, Jones 3-11, Buchanan 1-24, Anderson 0-13).
A Daniel Stonely century paved the way for Red Star's 55-run win over defending champions Greytown.
Stonely made 113, including 14 fours and three sixes as Red Star reached a healthy 251. Supporting him well were A.Phelps (41) and J Gough (35).
The latter was all aggression in his role of opener, hitting five fours, one five and one six. The pick of a weakened Greytown attack was Cody Parker who took 3-45.
It was Jared Watt who did the damage with the ball for Red Star as Greytown were dismissed for 195, of which D.Southey made 70 not out (10 fours) and last man in A.Ewington 34 (four fours and two sixes). Watt finished with the fine figures of 4-39.
Short scoreboard: Red Star 251(D.Stonely 113, Gough 35, Hull 3, Wilson 2, Tubman 13, Phelps 41, Watt 0, Moorcock 15, Burling 0 not out, C.Stonely 0, Caffell 4; Van de Venter 3-51, Ewington 0-39, Oswell 0-19, Hodder 2-30, Parker 3-45, Herbert 1-19, Hamilton 0-25);
Greytown 196 (Childs 17, Osbourne 3, Jonas 4, Parker 5, Herbert 1, Tosswill 15, Hamilton 8, Southey 70 not out, Van de Venter 0, Hodder 13, Ewington 34; Watt 4-59, Moorcock 2-28, Caffell 2-33, Wilson 1-39, Gough 0-31, Stonely 1-6, Burling 0-11).
The Bracewell Academy XI demonstrated their batting strength in beating Rathkeale College by seven wickets.
Rathkeale batted first and made 231., thanks in the main to some sensible batting by Tim Lucas (66) and Tom Broughton (51).
Will Stebbings with 2-30 bowled well for the academy and then starred with the bat as his team reached 232-3. He scored 63 while Gareth Jacobs made 72.
There was better news for Rathkeale College when they played their final inter-school match for 2004 against Scots College.
Rathkeale took first strike and made a flying start, scoring 55 in the first seven overs. They declared their innings closed at 234-9 after 46 overs with the leading scorers being Paul Lyttle 74, Tom Broughton 33, Andy Dodd 22, Tim Lucas 21 and Jacob Ross 21.
Scots College started their run chase badly and were soon 28-4 and from there they struggled to 57-8. Some spirited batting from the lower order did, however, put some respectability into their innings and they were all out for 135.
Bowling for Rathkeale Broughton took 2-25, Jason Donderman 3-20, Simon Clinton-Baker 3-50 and Dodd 2-27.
l Named today was the Wairarapa under-15 boys cricket team to play in their Central Districts selection tournament at Rathkeale from December 13 to 16. It is: Andy Dodd, Doug Bracewell,Sean Jarvis, Chris Wendon.,Robbie Anderson, Huib Van Vliet Anton Ross, Wade Braddick, Blake Lyford, Zane Hopman, Dean Van de Venter Richard Irons. Coach: Doug Bracewell. Manager: Craig McBride.
A practice session will be held at Rathkeale tomorrow, starting at 3pm.
