A group of more than 30 students attacked the occupants of a car outside James Cook High School in Manurewa yesterday.
The fight broke out after an altercation between 14-year-old student Graham Woodhouse and 16-year-old AJ Pomare, who was picking up his girlfriend, Hana White.
A witness said students descended on the
car with sticks and threw rocks at the vehicle just before 3.30pm outside the school gates. He said there were about 30 people at the scene.
A passenger window was smashed by a student who was on the car bonnet but fell off as the driver started driving away then stopped, the witness said.
Teachers tried to stop the fracas and police and an ambulance were called.
Graham Woodhouse's father, Darrell, said last night that he had seen his son only briefly after school before he left for league practice.
He had a scratch under his eye and a bruise on his forehead.
"He said he got dished up. He didn't know what the reason was but he did know the person involved."
AJ Pomare said he had words with the younger boy because he had walked out in front of the car. They both threw punches.
"We drove down the road to turn around and came back and [the students] ambushed us on the road.
"They opened the doors and started bashing us. There were about six people punching and kicking me."
Police took names and details but no further action had been taken last night.
