An earthquake has struck the North Island's east coast this morning, just after 5am.
The 4.5 magnitude jolt was 20 kilometres north west of Tolaga Bay, north of Gisborne, at 5.04.
GeoNet reports the quake was of "strong" intensity and people commenting on its Facebook page say they were woken
by it.
"Woke me up in Gizzy," said one. "Well that's me awake," said another.
It follows a 4.4 magnitude jolt in Wellington last night.
