Miss Horowhenua organiser Tracey Jones has decided she will not accept Karlena Cornell's resignation.
Since Miss Cornell offered to give up her crown for taking part in a striptease contest at an Australian sex show, her public support has sky-rocketed.
Ms Jones said although it was not the done thing, the striptease
was performed in an appropriate place, not in a public bar and it was not as if she offended anyone. The Sexpo was restricted to people 18 years and over.
"Karlena hasn't done any official duties since the Miss New Zealand contest, and I believe she did a fabulous job representing Horeowhenua there. She truly acted in the spirit of what beauty pageants are all about."
Ms Jones said she had received a flood of public support for Miss Cornell.
