Brian Sanders of Athletics Masterton in action during the national road relay championships held around Wakefield Forest, south of Nelson, last weekend. The Masterton team, which had an average age of 48yrs and contested the 35yrs to 49yrs grade, placed a creditable 54 th in a field of 84. The 62.7km course was described as undulating but contained a number of hills which made it difficult for participants to find a good running rhythm. They also had to negotiate a number of gravel forestry roads so fast times were very difficult to achieve. Individual times for the Masterton team were.-Lap One (9.6km):Graeme Butcher 39min 4secs. Lap two (9.6km): Malcolm MacDonald 41.27. Lap three (7.6km):Greg Baillie 38.15. Lap four (10km): Tony Price 35.52. Lap five (7km): Norman Chu 31.37. Lap six( 9.0km): John Chesmar 44.59. Lap seven (9.9km): Brian Sanders 40.24.
