Carterton New World Lynx coach Sandy Biel isn't getting too carried away by her team's flying start in the 2012 Netball Wairarapa premier one competition.
Two games have produced two wins; a 35-23 victory over Hells Hot Shots being followed by an exciting 38-37 success over Baywide Gladstone. However, Biel, who only took over the coaching role at the start of this season, is quick to warn there is still plenty to do before Lynx can be seen as a serious title contender.
"It's nice to have started so well but we're still at the stage where we are developing as a team. Things are progressing well but there's a long way to go."
Biel said the win over Gladstone last weekend was a wake-up call for Lynx who build a handy advantage over the first three quarters only to be almost overhauled in the final 15 minutes.
"We should have won easily considering the lead we had but we only just got there in the end because we weren't clinical enough with our attack. We can't afford to fall into that trap again."
Biel is confident, however, that Lynx have enough depth in their squad to keep improving. Three newcomers in Te Ata Phillips from Martinborough, Kate Campbell from Wellington and Kerewai Tatana from Celtic have already made a favourable impression; Phillips and Campbell for their hard-nosed defence and Tatana for her slickness on attack.
Other quality defenders in the line-up are Rebecca Buick and Mel Cullen while the midcourters are Anna Stuart, Hannah Brewer and Sue McGhie. Spearheading the shooting department are Sally Newcombe and Laura McFadzean.
The form book suggests Lynx will carry on their winning way at the Colombo Road courts in Masterton tomorrow. They will be up against a St Matthew's Collegiate side coming off the back of two losses and it's difficult to imagine anything less than a comfortable victory to Lynx.
In other premier one matches, Pioneer Blue is expected to make three from three when they meet Gladstone, Harcourts should have little trouble protecting their unbeaten record against Wairarapa College and Makoura College should have the edge over Hells Hots Shots.
