With plans for summer camping trips in the pipeline, Wormald is reminding holidaymakers to ensure their mobile homes are fitted with working fire protection equipment.
"It is easy to forget that caravans and campervans are at risk of fire in the same way a house can be," said Dave Hipkins, national technical manager with Wormald.
"Mobile home owners should consider all potential fire hazards such as small appliances and gas cookers, and ensure appropriate fire protection equipment is installed.
"Smoke alarms are an important element of fire protection as they can help detect a fire early and provide the precious time needed to escape to safety.
"Long-life photoelectric smoke alarms are recommended for caravans, and caravan-specific models are available at most major hardware stores," added Hipkins.
It is vital any smoke alarms installed are in proper working order. Before leaving for the holidays, mobile home owners should test their smoke alarms by pressing the test button on the device. Smoke alarms should be tested once a week when the caravan is in use, and once a month when it is not.
A 10-year life, non-removable, non-replaceable battery is recommended.
"Fire extinguishers and fire blankets are also important tools and should be easy to access and stored near an exit, where escape is also an option. As with smoke alarms, fire extinguishers and fire blankets should be regularly inspected and serviced or replaced as necessary," said Hipkins.
