State Highway 5 crash Rotorua-Taupō: Two critically injured, road shut

Two people have been critically injured in a truck and van crash on State Highway 5, between Rotorua and Taupō.

The crash at Tahorakurī Forest was reported to emergency services just after 7am and the highway is closed.

A Hato Hone St John spokesperson said two people in a critical condition were airlifted to Waikato Hospital.

A third person in a minor condition was assessed by ambulance staff at the scene.

Three ambulances, two helicopters, one rapid response vehicle and an operations manager were sent to the crash.

Fire and Emergency shift manager Colin Underdown said three crews were sent.

One person trapped in a vehicle was freed by firefighters.

A police spokesperson said SH5 is closed from Ohaaki Rd to Te Toke Rd.

“Motorists should choose alternative routes to travel in the area as emergency services work at the scene.”

The Serious Crash Unit has been advised.

The NZ Transport Agency said the road was expected to be closed for some time.
