Spy cameras on Poor Knights visitors

Conservationists have joined forces with the Navy to spy on visitors to the Poor Knights Islands marine reserve.

The Department of Conservation said a four-day joint exercise last week discovered two possible cases of illegal activity - mainly fishing.

DoC biodiversity manager Keith Hawkins said department staff were on HMNZS Kahu at the island from Tuesday, using videos and night equipment to record what people did at the reserve.

The exercise was aimed at stamping out fishing there.
