Labrador-retriever and border collie cross Max is a gentle and obedient 1-year-old who needs a new home.

Kate Right, a canine attendant at the SPCA village in Mangere, said Max would need an active household and an experienced owner able to set firm boundaries. "He can be a challenging dog because he likes to follow his own rules so he will need someone who is equally headstrong," she said.

Max, who was surrendered to an SPCA inspector, has medium-length fur that will need regular grooming.

His large size and energetic nature makes him unsuitable around young children.
