South's first female train driver admits to nerves

The South Island's first female train driver admits she still has nervous moments on the job.

Christchurch-based Raquel Doreen has recently been made Express Freight Locomotive Engineer for Toll Rail.

She is following in the footsteps of her father who was a shunter working in the Manawatu area.

There are now two female train drivers in New Zealand. Jessica Gage is based in Hamilton.

Ms Doreen says she has been driving for about three weeks and still finds she feels a little stressed heading to work, but says once she gets going she is fine.

She has not had any trouble from her male colleagues, who have been very supportive of their female recruit.
