"The low that has provided this southeast flow is falling apart, but there is one last piece of what we call upper-level energy that is just feeding in across the North Island as we go through tonight.
"So there may be one more little bout of some rain, just brief in nature, but when you've had so much rain you don't want anymore. This could move across the Gisborne/Hawke's Bay region tonight."
While the north and east of the county will have light showers over the course of the weekend, the rest of the country is looking good for the four-day weekend.
"It seems to be the further east and the further north you are, there is a slightly better chance of seeing some wet weather. The further south and west you are, and especially in the South Island, it looks like it is going to be drier and brighter."
Mr Corbett said the good weather experienced over the south of the South Island in recent days should continue over the weekend.
"Over the past couple of days, people down in Queenstown and Southland have just been smiling ear to ear - they've had some decent weather, 20 degrees by day, 4 degrees by night. That will continue.
"Also on the western coast of the North Island, like Taranaki, Waikato and even Wellington, it isn't looking too bad, because that southeast flow hits the ranges in the east of the North Island, all the moisture gets stuck and it dries out as it comes across."
Mr Corbett described the weather in the north and the east as an "improving situation".
"There may be a few showers in parts of the north and the east of the North Island for Saturday night - it may affect Auckland, but then improving for the Easter Bunny for Sunday and into Monday for most areas.
"It's not like the Easter Bunny wants to grab a raincoat and wander around the back gardens of houses planting eggs, does he?"
