A fire that broke out at a South Auckland scrap metal recycling facility this morning has been extinguished after sending plumes of black smoke into the air.
Fire and Emergency shift manager Hayley Prince said the blaze was put out by “dismantling the scrap pile usingon-site machinery”, and firefighters left the scene around 1.05pm.
Earlier, a Fire and Emergency spokesperson said they “received multiple calls about a fire at a rubbish station” at around 10.26am today.
When firefighters arrived at the scene on Rangi Rd in Takanini they found a scrap metal blaze approximately 5x5m.
Three fire engines were at the scene and 12 firefighters were fighting the flames.
Plumes of black smoke billowing into the air from the Phoenix Recycling Group facility could be seen from the Southern Motorway.
The smoke did not pose a hazard to traffic when first reported.
