The production company behind Shortland Street is denying that three alternative endings which reveal the identity of the show's serial killer were deliberately leaked as part of a publicity stunt.
For a short time last week, fans of the popular soap opera could view the three different endingson the internet site YouTube.
The identity of the Ferndale Strangler has kept viewers on the edge of their seats.
The killer's identity is to be revealed in the show's finale on December 14.
The company that makes the show, South Pacific Pictures, said it discovered the three endings on YouTube on Friday and took them down shortly after.
South Pacific Pictures chief executive John Barnett said yesterday that the endings had not been deliberately leaked.
"We didn't put them up. If you saw them, you'd see they weren't completed. The footage has time codes and stuff on it.
"We take these things very seriously, any breach of the storyline. But our key thing now is to get through to next week."
And he isn't any closer to finding out who had posted the endings on YouTube.
"We know who didn't do it. We know it didn't come from [South Pacific Pictures], we are pretty sure about that."
So, who are the possible killers identified in the endings posted on YouTube? Like all good end-of-season cliffhangers, there are more questions then answers. Do the victims die? Will the killer or killers be caught? Does anybody care?
Fans will have to tune in next January to find out.
