Smoke warning forced emergency landing at Auckland Airport

A flight was forced to make an emergency landing at Auckland International Airport after a smoke indicator warning light turned on, sparking a full-scale emergency response.

Nine fire trucks were called to the international terminal, and passengers were immediately evacuated after the plane landed.

An Auckland Airport spokeswoman said Air New Zealand flight NZ8109 from Auckland to Palmerston North, had made an emergency landing just before 12.30pm.

The plane had landed safely and customers were "immediately disembarked", she said in a statement.

"Emergency services met the aircraft as a precaution. Customers are being accommodated on alternative services this afternoon."

The aircraft is now being checked following the incident.

At 1.25pm one fire truck was still on scene. A Fire and Emergency NZ spokeswoman said all information on the incident would need to come from the airport.

A regional Air NZ plane has made a successful emergency landing at Auckland Airport. All passengers have been safely evacuated and engineering crews are investigating.
