Sleeping driver unharmed in crash

An Eketahuna woman has escaped injury after falling asleep at the wheel and crashing into a power pole.

Traffic Sergeant Chris Megaw said the 20-year-old was driving on SH2 between Greytown and Carterton near Ahikouka at about 2am yesterday when the crash happened.

A young woman driver was lucky to escape without injuries after falling asleep at the wheel and crashing.

"She fell asleep and went off the road and hit a power pole but was uninjured," Mr Megaw said.

The woman's 1993 Mazda sedan crossed the road and ploughed through a fence before coming to a halt just before a row of trees.

The car was "pretty much a wreck", Mr Megaw said.

The woman was the sole occupant of the car.

No other vehicles were involved in the crash.

It was unclear if factors other than fatigue had contributed to the accident, Mr Megaw said.

Police had yet to decide if any charges would be laid.
