A skier has died after being buried in an avalanche south of Queenstown today.
The 58-year-old man was trapped when the avalanche struck near the Devil's Staircase at around 2.45pm.
He was initially recovered from the avalanche debris, but died shortly after.
Police said the cause of the man's death
was unknown at this stage and has been referred to the coroner.
Police are now working to advise the next of kin.
