Having fallen about 60cm the six-year-old needed to be lifted up in his bid for freedom.
Staff members tried using cooking spray to make his leg slippery but it was not going to budge easily.
Fearful of injuring the youngster if they used too much force, they decided "to call in the experts".
The Fire and Emergency team arrived at the Manurewa school and added enough elbow grease to the leg grease necessary to free the six-year-old.
After a 20 minute ordeal, the youngster had a photo with the firefighters to show his mum Kirstein Tipene - who had also been called to the school.
Tipene said there was some panic when they realised Bronson-Jaye was stuck.
"My whole household wanted to come with me."
But by the time she arrived with her sister they had already managed to free Bronson-Jaye.
"He was pretty excited the firemen got his leg out."
Bleakley said the Fire and Emergency team had been quite jovial and lovely to work with.
"I don't think they had seen that before," she said.
She said the school would be reviewing the incident.
