Smartgate anomaly explained
"At the Smartgate I presented what I thought was my passport, was given a ticket, photo taken, and duly passed through. My wife put in what she thought was her passport, given a ticket but was refused entry. Checking her passport she realised that she had mine and visa versa. Question is, how did I get through on her passport? A reader writes: "As an officer that helps people use Smartgate I can tell you how this happens ... Passengers swap tickets accidentally, husband goes to the gate, wife follows closely behind, husband puts ticket in, Smartgate reads face of wife who is standing right behind him, instead of waiting back on the red feet. Smartgate opens, husband goes through. Wife presents husband's ticket, husband has already gone through so Smartgate doesn't see him in the vicinity, wife gets rejected. Then it is up to the Smartgate assistance officer to ensure both people have been processed. Without knowing all the details of what happened, that's usually the only way it can happen. The machines only work correctly when people follow the instructions on the sign."
"We saw this on our walk on our way home by Royal Oak roundabout on Saturday night," writes Brad. "Pretty dangerous if you ask me."
