Parents dig deep in originality stakes
Named and Shamed. Vanellope, Rydder, Jceion, and Burklee head the latest annual list of the most common baby names on the Social Security Administration register of first-time-appearing names.
There were 63 Vanellopes (girls), but only 10 each for Rydder and Jceion, the most popular debut names for boys. Other notables were Hatch (8 times) and Psalms (7).
In other "name" news, the four finalists in April's "Name of the Year" contest sponsored by Deadspin.com were the actual monikers Curvaceous Bass, (Dr) Eve Gruntfest, Chillie Poon, and the winner - Shamus Beaglehole. (Via News of the Weird)

Lego female scientists in top careers
Geochemist Ellen Kooijman's proposal for a Lego minifigure set of female scientists is to be released in August. The "Research Institute" has taken more than two years after a campaign that took off with huge support from the internet. She designed 12 figures and accessories. Lego will tweak the final designs but hasn't announced the specific characters or total number. Kooijman's proposed set includes an astronomer, a palaeontologist and a chemist.
Property crash? This listing for a section in Birkenhead is for sale for $359K. A reader pointed out that the Google Street View of the property includes the for sale sign in the image when they last sold the section (24 months ago for half the price!). Guess they did add the driveway, but still.
